Surabaya Shopping Guide
You could head to the newest Surabaya shopping haunt BG Junction for jewellery, the World Trade Centre at Jalan Pemuda for mobile phones and accessories, and to the THR Mall in Jalan Kusuma Bangsa for computers and IT equipment. You also have the Plaza Surabaya on Jl. Pemuda, a hotspot for competitively priced gadgets, apparel and cosmetics, which is designed more on the lines of a local market. And just next door, you have two entertainment complexes - TamanRemaja for the kids and THR for family fun.
Mega malls
The largest mall is the Plaza Tunjungan, located at Jl. Basuki Rachmat, an 8-minute walk from the Mariott (and even closer from the Sheraton). These four inter-connected buildings seem to sell everything money can buy! You'll find trendy cafes, boutiques, multiplexes, supermarkets and book stores here. Beware - on weekends, the place is teeming with teenagers!
Buildings II and IV offer good quality apparel at great quality prices, and the Sogo Department Store stocks chic imported goods. If you need to check your mail, there's an Internet cafe in the basement right near the entrance. And when the shopaholic in you needs some respite, stop for coffee or grab a snack at the umpteen coffee and fast food outlets spread across the plaza, or you check out some of the restaurants. So whether you're scouting for brands, branded apparel, gadgets, jewellery or a beauty salon, you'll find it all at the plaza.
Then you have the mega mall located outside Marga Dua, south of the city on Jl. Wonokromon, which houses umpteen Surabaya shops under one roof. Surabaya also boasts a mammoth outlet of hyper-store Carrefour. Don't miss the fantastic discounts and deals on high-end shopping on the top floor.
Clothes and shoes
A wholesale market, JembatanMerah Plaza (JMP) is famous for its fashionable clothes, shoes and sandals. The labyrinthine PasarTuri on Jl. Semarang is a more traditional market located in the interiors of the city, and sells a motley mix of clothes, electronics, houseware and second-hand books. The PasarBlauron area is full of shoe stores, and the PasarAtum is the place for tailoring and dressmaking.
International brands
If you are looking for quality boutiques and international brands, Mal Galaxi, located in an affluent Chinese neighbourhood on Jl. Raya Kertajaya Indah Timur, is just 20 minutes (by taxi) from the city centre.
Local craft
Surabaya's local craft is the locally inspired batik patterns, which can be seen on apparel, placemats and tablecloths. You can also pick up local craft from Bali, Irian Jaya, Jogjakarta, Sumatra, Sumba, and the other Indonesian islands, right here in Surabaya. And at reasonable prices! A Surabaya shopping list could include an exciting mix of masks, carvings of wood, wayang puppets, home decor, rattan furniture and tons more.
How best to pay
When you're at the local bazaars and while making smaller purchases, it's a good idea to pay by cash. Bigger stores, however, accept credit cards. A common (and advisable) practice adopted by many expats living here is to extract cash from the ATM using credit cards, and paying for the shopping with this. But quick warning! It's a common practice for shopkeepers to add a 3% fee to the cost of your purchase when you use your credit cards. And arguing with the shopkeeper may get you nowhere! If you want to get this 3% back, make sure the retailer or restaurant notes down the surcharge down, as an extra charge for using the card. You could then claim it from your month-end billing.
