Surabaya is a major centre in East Java, and you can get here from the rest of the island by bus, train or boat. It really helps that it has served as a trading port for over half a millennium, and is the provincial capital of East Java and Indonesia's second largest city. From Jakarta it takes a minimum of 9 hours to get here by train and 1¼ hours by flight. Direct bus connections are available from all the major cities in Central and East Java. Surabaya being a major port, you can also get here by the Pelni ships from Makassar (Ujung Pandang), Pontianak and Banjarmasin. The east and north of Surabaya directly faces the Madura Strain, and forms a coastal area along the beach.

Getting to Surabaya

You have several options of getting to Surabaya - the hourly shuttle service or comfy overnight trains from Jakarta, luxury buses from Bali and Yogyakarta, plenty of flights from Bali and Ujung Pandang and direct flights from Singapore, Taipei, Guangzhou, Perth and Hong Kong.

By air

The fastest route to Surabaya is flying in. The Juanda International Airport's new terminal building was opened in November 2006, and most of Indonesia's domestic carriers serve this airport, although there are not too many international flights. Singapore's Silk Air flies directly to Surabaya from Singapore. However, it could be easier to fly in from Bali or Jakarta. From Jakarta, many airlines run inexpensive flights directly to Surabaya, and they offer spectacular glimpses of Indonesia's landscape. You have a flight almost every hour to and from Jakarta and Denpasar, with less frequent service to other destinations in Indonesia. These cost less than $50, one way.

Garuda Indonesia operates five flights daily, between Denpasar and Surabaya, and one from Bandung. Also, there are 12 daily shuttle flights from Jakarta. And Mandala, a private airline, operates three more.

By land

Direct buses and trains also operate from Jakarta, and the 12-hour ride will cost you approximately $10.

It's a 14-hour drive from Jakarta via the northern coastal regions of Cirebon, Tuban and Semarang, if you take a bus or rent a car. And it takes a 16-hour train journey from Gambir Railroad Station in Jakarta, which operates two times a day.

By Sea

Take a boat ride from Jakarta to Surbaya on Pelni's (a state-owned company) passenger liners. And sail in from the islands of Balikpapan, Ujungpandang, Denpasar, Ambon and Manado on their liners KM Kerinci, KM Kambuna, KM Umsini, KM Rinjani, KM Tidar and KM Lawit, which set sail twice a week into Surabaya.

By taxi

This is a common and abundant form of transport in Surabaya. You can check with your Surabaya hotel staff to find the best option.

By Rented Car

Explore at leisure in a chauffeur-driven rented car. Or opt to drive yourself. Car rental companies and taxi services offer fixed rates on an hourly or route specific basis.

You must own a valid international driving licence if you plan to take the wheel yourself. Getting around Surabaya may take a while to get used to. Most international road conventions apply, but turns are not signalled, and right-of-way generally goes to the larger vehicle. Keep to the left side of the road while driving, and overtake on the right. It's important to indicate when you plan to turn left at a red traffic signal. But beware; many local drivers don't exactly follow traffic rules very diligently!
